Judging the World’s Ugliest Dogs
Whether you are a dog enthusiast or not, you would surely have a hard
time judging adorable dogs during contests regardless of their breed and
sizes. But it would be tougher to judge a contest where you have to
determine the most beautiful ugly dog among the participants. That is
why judges of the World’s Ugliest Dog pageants do not just base their
decision on looks alone. Here are the criteria for judging the ugliest
dog contestants.
First Impression
Probably you have already heard the saying “First Impressions Lasts.”
This is true especially for the ugly dog pageants. As soon as your
canine stepped its feet, rather its paws, to the stage it must
immediately catch the attention of the judges. Moreover, the adorable
but not so beautiful pet should also catch the attention of the audience
at the same time. You should not only depend on the natural looks of
your ugly dog alone. Try to put some accessories to your dog to make it
even more attractive. Remember that the first look of the judges would
give immediate points to your pet.
Special attributes or features
Before entering the ugly dog competition, determine if your canine has
special features particularly at the face. This takes up a huge
percentage in your dog’s score. Aside from that, the special attributes
of your dog can be the winning factor that would contribute to its
victory over the other contestants in the pageant.
Personality
The dog must be adorable, friendly, and has a good temperament during
the event. If possible, it should also display how it is affectionate to
you. There are some owners that let their pets do a little trick in
front of the judges and the audience just to show how pleasing their
dogs are. Dog fanatics somehow know what to expect from the canine’s
personality by simply knowing their breeds. It is important that your
ugly dog must show how it can socialize and that it is willing to please
the crowd particularly the judges. Therefore, you should do everything
you could to prevent your dog from becoming aggressive or timid during
the contest.
Audience reaction
This is just like the First Impression criteria. The ugly dog contestant
should have an impact to the audience as soon as its paws step on the
stage. Whatever their reaction will be, whether they will be awed,
amazed, or appalled by the looks of your canine, it will be a great
contribution to the scores that the judges will give to your pet.

These are the criteria for judging both the group of the mixed breed
ugly dogs and the purebred group. After being declared as the winners
for their individual groups, the two dogs will now compete and be judged
again according to the same criteria mentioned above. The dog who will
win will become the official World’s Ugliest Dog for that year.
Judging these unique canines is not as easy as it sounds. If you want to
be one of the juries for this kind of competition, it is important that
you have keen eyes and the interest for these odd-looking canines.
