Popular Ugly Dog Breeds

People all over the world are becoming more and more enthusiastic about the competitions of the so-called ugly dogs. These not-so-good looking canines are gaining popularity particularly in United States. As a matter of fact, there are now hundreds of dog breeders trying to create these ugly dogs because that is what is in demand in pet stores nowadays. So what are the breeds that are commonly seen as participants in the ugly dog contests?

Chinese Crested dogs

There were already Chinese Crested dogs that became part of the annual ugly dog contests in different countries. And most of these Chinese Crested canine participants won the competitions that they join. This is because of their unique features they are the highly anticipated contestants in such events. The Chinese Crested dogs do not have that much fur and they are quite blotchy at the same time. Only a small part of their head has hair. The same goes on their tail and their feet as well. This ugly dog breed also has a variety called Powder Puff. It was coined so because of the scattered white parts in the dog’s body.

Neopolitan Mastiffs

These are unattractive but huge dogs. This breed is more like a year-round Halloween dog mask because of the excess flesh hanging on its face. Familiar with the celebrity dog named Beethoven, right? Well the Neopolitan Mastiff actually drools twice or even three times more than the typical drool-rich canines out there.

Xoloitzcuintle

Don’t stress yourself too much in pronouncing the breed’s name. The Xoloitzcuintle, pronounced as Showloitsquintlee, is like a mixture of the Chinese Crested and Chihuahua. However, it is usually called by many as the Hairless Mexican Dog or sometimes as the Pharaoh Hound. The Xolo has eyes shaped like an almond, a sleek and hairless body, long neck, and ears that look like that of the bats.

Bulldogs

Believe or not, these adorable small canines are considered as ugly dogs. Its facial features are so ugly that they are so cute. But because the breed is beautifully ugly, the audience and the judges do not consider the bulldogs as the right contestants for the ugly dog pageants. Some of the notable features of the bulldogs include their folds of thick skin at the face, soulful eyes, small body, and pointy teeth.

Chinese Shar Pei

While the Shar Pei dogs are still young, there is no doubt that everybody would love to hold these puppies because they are simply cute and lovable. Unfortunately, as the Shar Peis grow older, the breed also outgrows the cuteness that they have. Their muzzle can be compared to the hippopotamus and they have wrinkled face that has larger folds than the bulldogs. But the wrinkles do no stay on the breed’s face alone. As the age increases, there are some Chinese Shar Peis that are getting large wrinkle folds at their bodies at the same time.

But the ugly dog contestants are not just limited to the said breeds. Pabst, the 2009 World’s Ugliest Dog winner comes from the breed of Boxer dogs yet he still managed to steal the title from the dog named Gus, a Chinese Crested canine that only has one eye and three legs.
